Meet Jorge

On painting

"I am interested in how little a painting can say and still hold an experience."

For more than four decades, architecture taught me to think about space through proportion, geometry, light and the way people experience what surrounds them. Painting gives me another way to explore many of those same questions — with fewer rules and a different kind of freedom.

I do not paint things so much as experiences. I may begin with something remembered, observed or simply held in my mind, then work toward its essential structure through layers of color, shifting gradients and geometric relationships.

The finished painting is not meant to explain that experience. Once it leaves the studio, what a viewer finds in it belongs to them.
